The device is the work of Japanese engineer Ikutaro Kekehashi. Marvin Gaye gave the 808 its first hit with Sexual Healing, and from then on more and more musicians began to experiment with it, such as Kanye West, who produced an entire album (808s and Heartbreak) with the 808. A good example of 808 bass in modern hip-hop/trap is "Gucci Gang" by Lil Pump.
